"Kokoro" is a circle of prayer which started to keep the memory of the March 11th Great East Japan Earthquake and its victims forever in our hearts. On Thursday May 10th at 11 pm New York time, which is Friday 11th at noon in Japan, we ask you to join us.

The Sanriku Railway, which used to run along the beautiful Sanriku coastline of Iwate Prefecture, was an important means of transportation for the locals. However with last year's tsunami, stations and railways were washed away and most of the 107.6 kilometers tracks suffered catastrophic damages.

Winding tracks and stations with just the foundations remained.

The once serene landscapes around the stations were now full of debris.

In the midst of desperation right after the earthquake, the thing that moved the president of Sanriku Railway Company to restore the railway was the snow he saw covering the tracks--he saw footsteps of the local people continuing along the tracks for miles and miles.

With people without cars and the transportation coming to a dead halt because of the debris yet to be removed, the only hope for the people was the railway.

"Sanriku Railway is an important means of transportation for the local people. We're definitely going to run the trains again," said he.

After the earthquake, all the railway workers worked as one and toiled day and night to restore the railway; part of the service was back in operation. Starting with the restoration of the tracks that were least damaged, they were able to operate limited sections just 5 days after the earthquake.

The locals called to railway workers again and again to thank them.

"The restoration of the railway leads to hope for the Sanriku coastal area," they said.

Aiming for a full restoration in the year 2014, the challenge of the Sanriku Railway continues.

To support the Sanriku Railway, special tickets are being sold.

The destination on the ticket says, "To restoration, to the future" and the expiration date is, "Valid as long as you don't give up."

Carrying everyone's dream, the Sanriku Railway will keep on running.

This month, "Kokoro" will hold the prayer on Thursday May10th at 11 pm New York time, which is Friday 11th at noon in Japan.

Let us take a moment to send our support to Tohoku.

4月祈りのお誘い Invitation to our circle of prayer in April

皆様：

「こころ」は月に一度、世界中の人が人種、宗教、国境を越え、東日本大震災の被災者の方々と共に祈る会です。今月はＮＹ時間4月10日（火）午後11時＜日本時間11日（水）正午＞に一斉に祈りを捧げます。どうか、お時間が合えば参加してください。お時間が合わない方も、どうかこの日に共に祈りを捧げましょう。

ニューヨークで、東北で地震や津波の被害のひどかった南三陸町に、被災した方々のこころのケアをするボランティアに行かれた臨床心理士の方のお話を聞く集いがありました。そこで参加者からこんな質問が出ました。「頑張って」というのは、被災してすでに身も心も疲れきっている方々に対して、さらに努力しろということで、言っていいのだろうかと。

そこに居た別の臨床心理士の方はこれに対し、日本語の「頑張る」という言葉は言葉通りの「励ます」というニュアンスだけでなく、「思いやる」という意味も含んでいると答えられていました。被災した方々に「寄り添う」気持ちを強く持ってさえいれば、支援したいという気持ちは通じるのですと。

災害後のこころのケアには長い期間を要するようです。2004年の中越地震では、被害にあった方が心の痛みから立ち直れずに、5年以上たった後に命を絶たれるというケースもあったということです。

こころの活動は、現地に行って面と向かってお話を聞いて、力になるという直接的なものではありません。でも私達一人一人が、傷ついている方々の心に真に寄り添うつもりで祈り続ければ、その癒しのエネルギーは必ず何らかのかたちで届くと信じています。

今月の「こころ」は、ＮＹ時間4月10日（火）午後11時＜日本時間11日（水）正午＞です。被災した方々のふんばりや、被災地でボランティアや支援活動をされている方々の懸命な取り組みを思うと、感謝の気持ちでいっぱいになります。寄り添う気持ちと感謝の気持ちを持って、ご一緒に祈りませんか。

“Kokoro” holds a circle of prayer once every month with people from all over the world and people from the afflicted areas in Japan. On April 10th at 11 p.m. New York time (11th at 12 p.m. noon in Japan), we ask you to join us.

In New York City, there was a gathering to hear stories from a volunteer clinical social worker who worked in Minami-Sanriku-cho, a town which was hit hard by the earthquake and tsunami. One of the participants asked: "Is it all right to say to the victims, `gambatte?`(a word meaning ‘hang in there, you can get through this’ ) Since the victims of the disaster areas are mentally and physically worn out, I hesitate to use that word because it sounds as if you're telling them to work harder. "　 Another clinical social worker responded. "The word ‘gambatte’ does mean ‘hang in there’ but it also includes feelings of compassion. If you have the heart to stand by the victims, then our wish to offer support will reach the people."

It is said that long term psychological support for the quake victims is needed. After the Mid-Niigata Prefecture Earthquake in 2004, there was a case where one of the victims could not heal the emotional pain and committed suicide after 5 years.

Kokoro's activity may not work directly with the victims, such as going over to the affected areas and talking with the people face to face, however, if each of us continues to pray with all our hearts and stand by these victims every month, we believe that our healing energy will reach these people in some form or another.

This month, KOKORO will give prayers on April 10th at 11 p.m. New York time (11th at 12 p.m. noon in Japan). We are deeply moved by the efforts made by the victims, the volunteer groups, and those who are engaged in victim support activities. Let us pray together with a thankful heart and stand by the people of Tohoku.

「こころ」は、東日本大震災を風化させたくない、亡くなった方々のことを忘れたくない、そんな思いで始まったお祈りの会です。

月に一度、日本国内と海外にも呼びかけて、被災者の方々と共に祈りを捧げています。3月の「こころ」は、震災一周年を迎えるにあたり、お祈りの時間帯が変更になります。今月は、震災の起きた日本時間3月11日（日）午後2時46分＜ＮＹ時間11日（日）午前12時46分＞に、皆で一斉に祈りを捧げたいと思います。

去年の3月11日午後2時46分。

私たちは、決して忘れません。

沢山の尊い命が犠牲になったことを。

今も尚、行方が分からない多くの方々がいるということを。

今は姿を変えてしまった、あの見慣れた景色、住みなれた町、

歩きなれたあぜ道や、どこまででも続く海岸線も。

そして、一緒に消えてしまった夢や願いがあったということも。

天国に旅立たなければならなかったあなたの分まで

精一杯生きていきます。

だから　どうか、見守っていて下さい。

皆で力を合わせ、この苦難を乗り越えてみせます。

だから　どうか、応援していて下さい。

問題が山積みで、時折心が折れそうになりますが、そんな時は

あなたのことを思い出します。

そして　あなたのことを思う、残されたご家族のことを思います。

この震災は、「誰かに」起きたことではありません

「私たちみんなに」起きたことなんです。

そのことを、私たちは決して忘れません。

3月の「こころ」では、私たちのそんな思いを、天国にいるあなたに届けたいと思います。

" KOKORO" began the circle of prayer for the Great East Japan Earthquake victims in order to prevent the memory of this tragic event and the havoc it created for its victims to fade with time. Every month, we ask people, not only in Japan but all over the world, to take a moment to join us in our prayer. This month, since it is the one year anniversary, we are changing the time in New York to March 11th 12:46 a.m. which is 2:46 pm in Japan,--the time when the earth quake hit the Tohoku area.

We Shall Never Forget March 11th, 2011, 2:46 p.m.

We will never forget the fact :

that so many people have lost their lives,

that so many people are missing even to this day,

although it is now altered,

that there was scenery that people were used to seeing:

the towns in which they lived,

the roads they used to take,

the ever continuing tranquil rice fields....

And we will never forget that there were dreams and wishes that were never fulfilled.

We are going to live our lives to the fullest for those who have left us.

So please, watch over us.

We will work together to get through the present hardships.

So please, support us.

With endless issues mounting, our motivation at times, fails us.

At times like this, we will think about you, and the families that were left behind.

This catastrophe did not only happen to "someone".

It happened to all of us.

"We shall never forget you."

皆様：

「こころ」は月に一度、世界中の人が人種、宗教、国境を越え、東日本大震災の被災者の方々と共に祈る会です。今月はＮＹ時間2月10日（金）午後10時＜日本時間11日（土）正午＞に一斉に祈りを捧げます。どうか、お時間が合えば参加してください。お時間が合わない方も、どうかこの日に共に祈りを捧げましょう。

岩手県の仮設住宅を無料で巡回する「カラオケカー」がテレビに映っていました。みんながとびきりの笑顔で、とても楽しそうに歌っていました。

花巻市では、震災後少年少女のオーケストラが誕生しました。小中学生95人が日々練習に励んでいる姿を写真で見ました。みんな生き生きと、本当にいい顔をしていました。

石巻市の漁港にボランティアに行っている友達がメールをくれました。「漁師のおっちゃん、めっちゃ元気やねん。一緒にいるだけでこっちが元気になる。ほんま、東北の人って本当によく働く…感動するよ、あの働きっぷり。」

宮城県では仙台イチゴが販売されました。震災で大打撃を受けたイチゴ農家でしたが、見事に復活。大粒の、まぶしいほど赤い色をしたイチゴ。それを食べた友人が、こうつぶやきました。「これは復活の味、希望の味だ。」

福島のいわき市では双葉町から避難している人たちによって伝統のダルマ市が開かれました。ふるさとの伝統行事にたくさんの人が集まり、大にぎわいでした。復興（復幸）を願うこのお祭りでは、みこしを担いだ若者が「ふるさと双葉、未来へつなげろ」の大きな掛け声とともに仮設住宅を練り歩きました。

被災地の復興力と前向きな強いエネルギーに、支援する側のわたしたちが逆に励まされているように思い、感謝の気持ちでいっぱいになりました。

私たちは皆繋がっています。

日常にある小さな奇跡に気づき，感謝の気持ちを忘れないように過ごし、そして元気でいること... これも私たちができる復興に向けての大切な手助けの一つのように思います。今月の「こころ」は、ＮＹ時間2月10日（金）午後10時＜日本時間11日（土）正午＞です。今月は、被災地で元気に頑張っている方々に「ありがとう」の気持ちを込めて、皆で祈りを捧げませんか。このお知らせは、どうぞご自由に転送して下さい。

“Kokoro” holds a circle of prayer once every month with people from all over the world and people from the afflicted areas in Japan. On Friday February 10th at 10pm New York time (Saturday the 11th at 12:00 noon in Japan), we ask you to join us.

We saw on television about a free "karaoke car" that goes around the temporary housings in Iwate prefecture. Everyone was having a good time-- their faces were beaming.

In Hanamaki, a boys' and girls' orchestra was formed after the earthquake. There were photos of 95 elementary and middle school students who practice every day. They looked animated and full of life.

A friend, who goes to a fishing harbor in Ishinomaki to do a volunteer work, sent me this email. "You wouldn't believe how lively these fishermen are-- you get energized just spending time with them. The people of Tohoku are such hard workers. I'm deeply touched with their diligence."

In Miyagi prefecture, strawberries from Sendai were being sold. After the earthquake, the strawberry farms took a beating, but now they have recovered. The strawberries are red, ripe, and large. A friend who ate them said, "It was the taste of reconstruction, the taste of hope."

In Iwaki, Fukushima, the traditional "Daruma-Doll Fair" was held by the people who evacuated from the town of Futaba. The festival was bustling with people who came to see the traditional event. Wishing for the recovery of Tohoku, young people carried the "mikoshi"(portable shrine) around the temporary housings, shouting "For Futaba-cho, for the future!"

This month, "Kokoro" will hold the prayer on Friday February 10th at 10pm New York time (Saturday the 11th at 12:00 noon in Japan). 去年の12月、日本から遠く離れたNYで、福島復興支援のキャンドルナイトイベントが行われました。Blue Sky Project実行委員会主催のこのイベントには、日本の復興を願う多くの人が集まりました。その中には、日本の被災者の方々の姿もありました。福島から届いた会津伝統工芸の絵ろうそくに火が灯され、皆で福島復興を祈願する歌を歌いました。“We love you, 福島…” -------- たくさんの人たちの歌声が、凍えそうな夜空に温かく響き渡りました。みんなの歌声と復興への思いが重なりました。予定通りの歌を全て歌い終わっても誰もその場を離れようとせず、合唱はまた繰り返されました。皆の思いは一つになっていました。

このキャンドルナイトイベントで使われた会津伝統工芸の絵ろうそくには、福島で被災に遭った子供たちの願いが書き込んでありました。「友達に会いたい」、「早く自分の家に帰りたい」…。でも、メッセージはそれだけではありませんでした。「支援をありがとう」、「世界が平和になりますように」、「皆が幸せになりますように」…これも、被災地から届いたメッセージでした。

昨年の「こころ」では、たくさんの人の被災地への思いを伝えてきました。今年は、被災地が皆で苦難を乗り越え、一丸となって復興に向けて取り組むその元気な姿も、出来る限り多くの人に伝えていきたいと思っています。皆の心にともったキャンドルの光を、決して絶やすことのないように。

“Kokoro” holds a circle of prayer once every month with people from all over the world and people from the afflicted areas in Japan. On Tuesday January 10th at 10pm New York time (Wednesday the 11th at 12:00 noon in Japan), we ask you to join us.

Last December, there was a candlelight vigil held in New York to support Fukushima’s reconstruction effort. At the event, hosted by the Blue Sky Project committee, many people who wished for Japan’s recovery gathered. Among them were the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake. For this event, painted candles, which are traditional crafts known from Aizu region of Fukushima, were sent from Fukushima. After the candles were lit, people sang songs, including, “I Love You & I Need You Fukushima,” praying for the reconstruction of the area. The supporter’s singing could be heard reverberating in the cold night sky. Everyone’s voice and the wish for Japan’s recovery were united. Even after all the songs had been sung, no one wanted to leave, and the singing continued. People’s hearts became one.

The painted candles used in the event all had messages written by children who were affected by the disaster in Fukushima: “I want to see my friends again,” “I want to go home.” There were other messages: “Thank you for your support,” “I wish for world peace,” “I wish for everyone’s happiness” -- these were also messages from the disaster-stricken region.

Last year, Kokoro conveyed many people’s thoughts about the afflicted areas. This year, we would also like to shed light on the courageous spirit and the efforts of the people of Tohoku, as they work together to rebuild their lives. May the flame of the candle continue to burn in our hearts.

This month, “Kokoro” will hold a prayer on Tuesday January 10th at 10pm New York time (Wednesday 11th at noon, Japanese time).
